What are the ATEX standards?

Two standards concerning explosive atmospheres have came into effect on July 1st 2003, imposed by the European Union, known as the ATEX standards. Firstly, ATEX norms consist in the identification and limitation of hazardous areas, and they have been followed by many other standards and decrees. The equipment used must be ATEX certified. In the interest of protection, the employer is thus required to identify the areas in which there is a risk of explosion and to take the necessary measures to prevent the risks.

What are hazardous areas?

An hazardous area (ATEX) is a place that has a higher than average risk of explosion.  The explosion risk can come from gas, mist or steam.

ATEX zoning targets measure and define risks and adapt products you may use according to hazardous areas. The employer must indicate which areas are potentially explosive on a site (gas, steam or dust).

What is the hazardous areas classification?

These hazardous areas are classified according to the frequency and duration of the presence of an explosive atmosphere. They are delimited in different "ATEX zones". The purpose of this zoning is to qualify the risk and to adapt the equipment to be used according to the type of hazardous areas.logo ATEX

According to standard 1999/92/CE and to article R.4227-50 of the French Labour Code, there are three levels of  ATEX zones for each distinction realized between zones with gas and steam and zones with the presence of dust :

Gas and steam

Zone 0

An area in which an explosive gas atmosphere is present continuously or for a long time.

Zone 1

An area in which an explosive gas atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation.

Zone 2

An area in which an explosive gas atmosphere is not likely to occur in normal operation and, if it occurs, will only exist for a short time.

Dust

Zone 20

An area in which an explosive gas atmosphere is present continuously or for a long time.

Zone 21

An area in which an explosive gas atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation.

Zone 22

An area in which an explosive gas atmosphere is not likely to occur in normal operation and, if it occurs, will only exist for a short time.
